FAQ

  • When is my backflow test due?

Each water district has its own deadlines for backflow device testing in Oregon. Typically, the deadline can be found on your notice. Sometimes it is due on a specified date, and other times it is due on the anniversary of the previous test date.

  • What is a backflow device?

A backflow device, also known as a backflow preventer, is a device that prevents water from flowing backward into a city's water supply from a customer's water system. Backflow devices are installed on pipes and allow water to flow in one direction, such as from the city's water supply into a home's piping, but prevent water from flowing backward into the main water supply. Backflow prevention devices protect clean water lines from potential contaminants.

  • Why do I need my backflow valve tested every year?

Like any mechanical device, backflow preventers have the potential to break or malfunction, especially as they get older. To protect the water supply and ensure clean water, it is required to test backflow preventers anually to ensure they are functioning properly, and not leaking contaminants into drinking water.

Backflow prevention in Portland, the Columbia Gorge, and all of Oregon is required by the Oregon Health Authority.
